Activity 3
Science - Tornado in a bottle

Make a Tornado in a Bottle
Learn how to make a tornado in a bottle with this fun science experiment for kids. Using easy to find items such as dish washing liquid, water, glitter and a bottle you can make your own mini tornado that’s a lot safer than one you might see on the weather channel. Follow the instructions and enjoy the cool water vortex you create!

What you'll need:
  • Water
  • A clear plastic bottle with a cap (that won't leak)
  • Glitter
  • Dish washing liquid

Instructions:
  1. Fill the plastic bottle with water until it reaches around three quarters full.
  2. Add a few drops of dish washing liquid.
  3. Sprinkle in a few pinches of glitter (this will make your tornado easier to see).
  4. Put the cap on tightly.
  5. Turn the bottle upside down and hold it by the neck. Quickly spin the bottle in a circular motion for a few seconds, stop and look inside to see if you can see a mini tornado forming in the water. You might need to try it a few times before you get it working properly.

What's happening?
Spinning the bottle in a circular motion creates a water vortex that looks like a mini tornado. The water is rapidly spinning around the center of the vortex due to (an inward force directing an object or fluid such as water towards the center of its circular path). Vortexes found in nature include tornadoes, hurricanes and waterspouts (a tornado that forms over water).

Have a great day and remember to read your level book and practice your phonics. Here is the link:

Rocket Mole Wednesday

Good morning Year One

I hope you had a good evening.  Today is going to be sunny so let's enjoy.  If you go into your garden today remember to put on sunscreen to protect your skin.  Our daily act of kindness for today is to tell someone how much you love them.  It could be a grandparent that you haven't been to see.

Warm up - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Lm4rSMDOR8   - Twist and Shout with Maximo

Activity 1
English- To listen to our story again about Rocket Mole and then to make your own underground hole.

Make your own underground room like MoleCover a table with a blanket to make a dark space. You could make a cosy ‘home’ for mole underneath with cushions, something to read and perhaps a torch as a light. Turn the light off to see how dark it is – can you still see? If you have a play tunnel, they could imagine being mole boring tunnels underground and seeking adventure. You could make your underground room outside in the garden. It's up to you!

You can read your level book in your underground hole.  Here is your phonics link:

Activity 2
Maths

To use repeated addition to represent equal groups.

If you have problems on the link you can make groups of equal objects and write addition sentences for them. e.g.

What is Repeated Addition? - Definition, Facts & Example

Activity 3
History - To make your own Time Capsule

Have you ever found something from a long time ago?  We often learn about the past by discovering things.  Why not make history by choosing to put things in a time capsule and burying them.  Just think, in the future, somebody will find them and learn about what it was like at this moment in time.

What you need:

Choose objects to put in a time capsule. (These objects are to be buried so check with parents first)

A strong, water tight container.  Choose one that is big enough for your chosen items.

A piece of paper.

What you do:

1.  You may wish to choose things to represent people in your family, hobbies, photo of your house.  It could be a picture or something written down about your family.  You could draw around everyone's hands or picture of your pet!

2.  On the piece of paper, write a letter to the future finder of your box.  You may want to tell them about yourself and say why you have chosen this items.  Tell them the fun things you are doing to keep busy.  Tell them how you feel and what you have been doing to help others.  Tell them about clapping for the NHS and why.

3.  Choose carefully where you are going to bury the time capsule.  (Please check with parents)  Then bury it and leave it.

4.  All we can do now is wonder who, in the future, will find your time capsule.

Have fun and choose your objects wisely!

Reflection

Try- out Tuesday

Good morning Year One

Welcome to a new day.  I would like you to think about daily acts of kindness.  So maybe today you can leave someone in your family a happy note.  Write a note telling them something nice, for example - I love you to the moon and back.  You can leave it somewhere for them to find.

Have a lovely day and remember to share a picture through email or comment on our class blog.

Activity 3- PSHE
Today we are thinking about kindness.  For try-out Tuesday Harold would like you to use your kind hands for a creative activity.

Here is a note from Harold explaining how to make your kind hands picture.  If you haven't got any of the resources below, you can use your own things at home to make your picture.  Just have fun!

It's called Hand Pop Art and it's inspired by the famous artist Andy Warhol, have you heard of him? Well if you want to have a go at creating some Hand Pop Art (or Hoof Pop Art in my case), here's what to do, (remember to ask your grown-up at home before you do this as it could be a bit messy!):
You will need:
  • Paper or card in bright, contrasting colours
  • Big piece of paper (any colour)
  • Paint (this can be black or another colour)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue
And here are step-by-step instructions:
  1. Draw round your hand on some coloured card, using the pencil.
  2. Then cut around the hand very carefully, you might need an adult to help with the scissors.
  3. You can use that cut-out to make three more hands  - draw round the cut-out and then cut those out too.
  4. Once you've done that you should have four cut-out hand shapes.
  5. Glue each of these onto a piece of different colour card, as you can see Noah and Benjamin have done in the picture, (look underneath the black paint).
  6. Stick these four pieces of card to your big piece of paper and trim off any excess from the big piece underneath.
  7. Paint your hands with black paint.
  8. Carefully place your hand onto the cut-out hand to make the print, then carefully (again) peel your hand away.
  9. Now leave your masterpiece to dry.
Phew, it's tired me out just writing that!
Well I'd better get started on my Hoof Pop Art. After I've done that I'm going to be all arted out!
Stay happy and healthy!
Love from Harold xxx
Try-out Tuesday is all about doing something new, here's a picture of me learning the guitar!   What could you try to do?  Maybe there's something new you can learn.

Remember to read your level book and practice your phonics.  Have a lovely day!
